At some point in your life, you may have decided you are simply not the yoga “type”. Did you know that there many types of yoga and you might fit in after all? Whether you’re looking to get relief for stress, gain strength, increase your flexibility, work on balance, clear your head or feel more comfortable in your skin, there is a type for you!
Yes, you've heard about yoga for stress management, but you can barely touch your toes. So there's no way you're going to stand on your head or twist your foot behind your neck like a human pretzel.
Yoga has long been used for centuries to relax the body and calm the mind, which is ideal for relieving stress. It doesn’t have to be about standing on your head or twisting yourself like a pretzel. It can be about breathing better and deeper. It can be about practicing simple poses to start and then growing as you regularly practice and build a steady routine.
And meditate? Last time you tried to lie still for three minutes you ended up obsessing about the stack of bills on your desk and what to have for dinner. Not exactly relaxing thoughts. I say, even three minutes of sitting still can bring benefits to your mental health.
The benefits of yoga include decreased stress and tension, increased strength and balance, increased flexibility, lowered blood pressure and reduced cortisol levels. What is cortisol? Cortisol is a steroid hormone found in the human body, produced by the adrenal gland and regulated by the hypothalamus. It is released into the blood stream in response to stressful stimuli and designed to protect the body from negative effects of short-term and acute stress. High stress can make us eat more and gain weight.
Yoga's emphasis on breathing and the mind/body/spirit connection also yields strong emotional benefits. People who practice yoga frequently report that they sleep better, eat less and feel less stressed.
